A symposium themed "Science for Future Society" was held at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou city on November 12, 2019 as part of the 2019 General Meeting of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), which was organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and Zhejiang University.

Huai Jinpeng, executive vice president of CAST and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), attended the symposium and delivered a keynote speech to an audience of over 180 people, including members of the TWAS Council, representatives of relevant CAS affiliates and teachers and students of Zhejiang University.
Huai said that CAST has always been committed to actively building channels for international people-to-people exchanges in the field of science and technology. Through hosting the CAST Annual Meeting, the China Science and Technology Summit, the World Conference on Science Literacy, the World Science and Technology Development Forum and the World Young Scientist Summit among other activities, CAST has made full use of its academic, science communication and think tank resources to build platforms for scientists, educators and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and jointly explore ways to address global challenges.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasized that science and technology innovation and science communication contribute to innovative development side by side, like both wings of a bird, Huai said.
Huai pointed out science literacy is increasingly becoming the most important part of a citizen’s all-round development.
Noting that China attaches great importance to science communication, Huai said that CAST needs to bring into full play its role as the main social force for science communication, and cooperate with TWAS on building platforms for exchanges among young scientists of developing countries, on pushing for designing science educational programs for exchanges among young students, thereby jointly contributing to the improvement of mankind’s science literacy and the world’s sustainable development.

Hosted by academician Yang Wei, TWAS Treasurer and former president of Zhejiang University, the symposium also highlighted keynote speeches by international organization representatives and technology experts, including TWAS president Mohamed Hanssan, TWAS executive director Romain Murenzi, Zhejiang University president Wu Zhaohui, and Alibaba Cloud founder and the chief architect of "Hangzhou City Brain" Wang Jian.
